Cooking Safety

Did you know that cooking fires are the leading cause of house fires?

  • Two-thirds of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.
  • Clothing is the item first ignited in less than 1% of home cooking fires, but clothing ignitions caused 8% of the home cooking fire deaths.
  • Ranges or cooktops account for over half (53%) of home cooking fire incidents.
  • Unattended equipment is a factor in over one quarter (29%) of reported home cooking fires and half of the associated deaths

Never leave cooking appliances unattended while in use and remove all items from the stovetop when you're done cooking.

Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so that no one can bump them or pull them over.

Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wood utensils, food packaging, or dish towels – away from your stovetop.
Keep stovetop, microwave and any cooking appliance clean with the proper cleaning tools
Have a working smoke alarm and extinguisher nearby
Unplug electric appliances when you are not using them. Even when turned off they still draw an electric current
Keep children and pets atleast 3 feet away from stovetops

Did you know to never put water on an oil fire? Use your extinguisher or cover with a metal lid.
