Apartment and Work Place Fire safety - Since each building is unique, you should learn the approved "Fire Safety Plan" specifically designed for your building.

If there is a fire in your apartment you must decide if it is possible to leave or if you are not able to.

If you are able to leave

• Before opening any door; the door to the hall or stairway, make sure it is safe to do so. Reach high with the back of your hand to touch the door, the door handle, and the space between the door and frame. If any of them feel hot, do not exit. If everything feels cool, brace your shoulder against the door and open it carefully. Be ready to close it quickly if heat or smoke rush in. As you leave, close all doors behind you.

• Spread the word that there is a fire and pull the fire alarm as you exit through the nearest stairway

• DO NOT use the elevator.

• Once outside, call the fire department by dialing 911.

• Meet the firefighters at the front entrance and tell them where the fire is.

If you are not able to leave

• You must protect yourself from smoke. Stay in your apartment until you are rescued or until you are told to leave. This may take a long time. Do not try to leave your apartment a long time after the alarm has sounded. The longer you wait, the more risk there is that heavy smoke will have spread into stairways and corridors. Your chances of survival are less. Keep smoke from entering your apartment. Use duct tape to seal cracks around the door and place wet towels at the bottom. Seal vents or air ducts the same way.

• If smoke enters your apartment telephone the fire department, tell them where you are and then move to the balcony. Close the doors behind you. If you don't have a balcony, go to the most smoke-free room, close the door and seal it with tape and towels. Open the window for fresh air. Show your rescuers where you are by hanging a sheet from the window or balcony. Keep low to the floor where the air is cleaner. Listen for instructions from authorities. 

� Stay Warm, Stay Safe! Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. This includes space heaters, fireplaces, and radiators. 

🏠 Before you turn on your heating system, have it inspected by a qualified professional. Regular maintenance keeps your home safe and cozy!

🚫 Never use an oven to heat your home! It’s a fire hazard and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Choose safe heating options! 

🧯 Have a fire extinguisher nearby when using space heaters and know how to use it! Safety is key for a warm winter!

🔌 Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, not extension cords or power strips. Overloaded circuits can spark fires! 

🌬 Check your furnace filters regularly and replace them as needed to ensure efficient operation and reduce fire risks! A clean filter is a safe filter! 

🚪 Have an escape plan in case of fire! Make sure everyone in your home knows two ways out of every room, especially if using heating equipment this winter!

👶 Keep children and pets away from heating equipment! Establish a safe zone to prevent burns and accidents during the colder months! 

🔔 Test smoke alarms monthly, especially during heating season! Ensure they’re working to keep your home safe from fire hazards this winter!

High Rise Fire Safety

🏢 Know your escape routes! Familiarize yourself with at least two ways out of your apartment and building. Every second counts in a fire!

🚪 Close before you doze! Sleep with bedroom doors closed to slow the spread of fire and smoke. It could save your life! 

🔥 Never use elevators during a fire! Always take the stairs to exit. Practice your escape plan regularly. 

🚒 If you can't escape, shelter in place. Close all doors, stuff cracks with towels, and call 9-1-1 from inside your unit. 

🍳 Stay in the kitchen when cooking! Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Keep your home and neighbors safe. 

🚨 If there's a fire in your apartment: Get out, close doors, pull the alarm, and yell "FIRE"! Use stairs, not elevators. Call 9-1-1 when safe. Your quick action saves lives!

🔥 To stay or go? If you can't leave during a fire, protect yourself! Seal doors with tape and wet towels. Call 9-1-1. Stay low where air is cleaner. Safety first!

Feel the door before opening during a fire. Hot? Find another exit. Cool? Leave immediately using stairs. Encounter smoke? Try another stairway or return to your unit. 

🏢 Know your building! Familiarize yourself with fire safety features and emergency procedures. Locate all exit stairs on your floor. Be prepared, stay safe! 

🆘 If smoke enters your apartment: Call 9-1-1, move to the balcony or most smoke-free room. Seal doors, hang a sheet from window to signal your location. Stay low and await instructions.
